What is pattern imprinted concrete?

You might have heard of pattern imprinted concrete before and wondered what it is and why so many people are choosing to go for it these days. Here we’ll look into what pattern imprinted concrete actually is.

What is pattern imprinted concrete?

A pattern imprinted concrete driveway is essentially a concrete driveway, however whilst the concrete is wet a pattern is stamped into the concrete. This is way you sometimes here it called stamped concrete. This concrete is then sealed to prevents erosion.

The process is a little more complex than just pouring concrete though. Prior to the concrete being poured, the surface must be excavated and prepared, with hardcore (large rocks effectively) used as base and drainage added as well. This process ensures that the concrete driveway isn’t damaged by water.

Why is pattern imprinted concrete so popular?

Pattern imprinted concrete has come about as an alternative to other paving methods such as Indian stone and block paving. In part this is due to it generally being cheaper than alternatives, whilst still providing aesthetic appeal and in part due to the huge benefits such as low maintenance cost and effort and the diversity of colours and designs available. In your research into pattern imprinted concrete you may have come across resealing and resurfacing and wondered what they were. Well, here are some brief summaries.

What is concrete driveway resurfacing?

Concrete driveway resurfacing literally means to place another surface over the top of the existing concrete. This could be more concrete or bricks or even gravel. Most commonly it refers to resurfacing with concrete, however resurfacing a concrete driveway is unlikely to be needed if the driveway is properly maintained. Resealing is likely the most important of these.

What is concrete driveway resealing?

Concrete driveway resealing is the process of cleaning the driveway and reapplying the sealant. This ensures that a protective layer stays on the surface of the concrete to prevent damage. This generally only needs to be done every 10 years. In combination with proper drainage this can ensure your driveway will last around 40 years and a need to resurface will be unlikely.
